PFUJ Launches Book on it’s 70 Years of Struggle for Press Freedom in Pakistan
The Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists’ (PFUJ) book about its eventful of Even decades is now will be launched soon. The book, titled
“From Layoffs to Lashes: PFUJ’s 70-year Fight for Media Freedom”,
has compiled to mark 70th anniversary or PFUJ’ establishment.
The PFUJ can justifiably claim that it’s unlike any other association of professionals in Pakistan, why other body can even think of matching what PFUJ has managed to achieve since its inception in 950. It took on military rulers (Generals Ayub Khan, Zia ul Haq and Pervez Musharraf) and lived to tell its tales of defiance long after the dictators had met their fate; and it worked tirelessly for the cause of freedom of the media and tint or expression throughout its long journey.
According to a press release issued by PFUJ President Shahzada Zulfiqar and Secretary General Nasir Zaidi, the book is one of revelations as it serves to document several eye-opening events in PFUJ’s long journey for press freedom and freedom of expression.
Comprising over 50 chapters, more than 20 or them in English, the book that’s spread over pages chronicles the sacrifices rendered by journalists for the cause of press freedom in the 1970s but also brings on record the strong-arm tactics employed by the establishment to silence independent minded Journalists last year. It has been compiled and formulated under a PFUJ project led by renowned anchor and senior Journalist Mazhar Abbas. Its English chapters have been edited by Nizamuddin Siddiqui and Urdu chapters by Waris Raza.
The book printed by the Karachi Union of Journalists, has chapters on the torchbearers or PFUJ’s campaigns Iike M.A. Shakoor, Asrar Ahmed. MinhaJ Barna and Nisar Osmani. It also highlights the national union’s efforts for improving the working and economic conditions of Journalists, according to the handout.
It said that notable among the campaigns launched by the PFUJ were those of 1970, 1978 and 2M, during which Journalists called strikes, held rallies and demonstrations and even courted arrest. As a result, they were incarcerated and even flogged on the orders of military courts.
On other occasions many of them were sacked by the managements of their organizations. In short they suffered physical hardships as well as economic deprivations.
“PFUJ played a leading role in defending freedom of expression, economic rights of workers as well as civil liberties throughout the 70 years of its existence,” the press release said
he press release added that PHJJ would continue to play its role in mitigating the problems being faced by journalists and striving for press freedom.

شایع ہوگئی ہے۔ جس کی تقریب پذیرائی ملک کے چاروں صوبائی دارالحکومتوں اور اسلام آباد میں الگ الگ کی جائے گی پاکستان فیڈرل یونین آف جرنلسٹس کتاب کا اردو اور انگریزی ٹائٹل پہلے ہی جاری کرچکی ہے۔ پاکستان میں صحافیوں کی جدوجہد کی تاریخ آزادی صحافت اور آزادی اظہار رائے کے لیے گرفتاریوں، جیلوں، کوڑوں اور نوکریوں سے برطرفیوں سے عبارت ہے۔ صحافی پاکستان فیڈرل یونین آف جرنلسٹس کے پلیٹ فارم سے ملک میں آمریت کے خلاف اور جمہوریت کی بحالی کی تحاریک میں ہمیشہ صف اول کے سپاہی رہے ہیں اور یہ جدوجہد 70 سالوں پر محیط ہے ان 70 سالوں میں پاکستان فیڈرل یونین آف جرنلسٹس کن کن ادوار سے گزری کتاب میں مختلف مضامین کے ذریعے اس کا احاطہ کرنے کی کوشش کی گئی ہے۔
پی ایف یو جے کی جانب سے جاری اعلامیے کے مطابق یہ کتاب آزادی اظہار اور آزادی صحافت کے سفر میں آنے والے چشم کشا واقعات کا احاطہ کرتی ہے۔ 500 صفحات پر مشتمل کتاب میں 50 مضامین ہیں، جن میں 20 سے زائد انگریزی زبان میں ہیں۔ کتاب میں 1970 میں آزادی صحافت کی جدوجہد اور دور حاضر میں صحافت کو لاحق خطرات کو بیان کیا گیا ہے۔ پی ایف یو جے سیکریٹری جنرل ناصر زیدی کے مطابق اس مقصد کے لیے رواں سال پی ایف یو جے نے سابق سیکریٹری جنرل پی ایف یو جے مظہر عباس کی سربراہی میں ایک کمیٹی قائم کی تھی جس نے مختلف افراد سے رابطے کرکے ان کے مضامین حاصل کیے ہیں کتاب کو اردو اور انگریزی زبان میں شایع کیا گیا ہے اردو حصے کے مدیر سینئر صحافی وارث رضا جبکہ انگزیزی سائڈ کے ایڈیٹر کراچی یونین آف جرنلسٹس کے صدر نظام الدین صدیقی ہیں کتاب میں آئی اے رحمن، علی احمد خان، رحیم اللّہ یوسف زئی، ضیا آمریت میں کوڑوں کی سزا جھیلنے والے پی ایف یو جے کے موجودہ سیکریٹری جنرل ناصر زیدی، اقبال جعفری، خاور نعیم ہاشمی، پیپلز پارٹی کے رہنما مسرور احسن، جناب فاضل راہو کے صاحبزادے اسماعیل راہو، حسین نقی، محمد علی صدیقی، اسرار احمد، محمود شام، پی ایف یو جے کے صدر شہزادہ ذوالفقار، شبر اعظمی، حامد میر، فریدہ حفیظ، مہ ناز رحمان، جی این مغل، پروفیسر ڈاکٹر توصیف احمد خان، پی ایف یو جے کے سابق سیکریٹری جنرلز مظہر عباس، سی آر شمسی، امین یوسف، خورشید عباسی پی ایف یو جے کے سابق صدور پرویز شوکت اور افضل بٹ ، کے یو جے کے سابق صدور فہیم صدیقی، جاوید اصغر چوہدری، اشرف خان ، حسن عباس ، احمد خان ملک، مطیع اللہ جان، بلال فاروقی، فواد حسن، جاوید صدیقی، مجید گل سمیت دیگر کے مضامین شامل ہیں کتاب کا سرورق ملک کے ممتاز صحافی کارٹونسٹ فیکا نے ڈیزائن کیا ہے۔ کتاب کی اشاعت کی ذمہ داری کراچی یونین آف جرنلسٹس نے لی تھی جو پوری کردی ہے پروجیکٹ کے سربراہ مظہر عباس کے مطابق یہ کتاب صحافتی جدوجہد کو ضبط تحریر میں لانے کی پہلی کوشش ہے یہ سلسلہ جاری رہے گا اور پاکستان میں صحافیوں کی جدوجہد کی تاریخ کو آئندہ مزید کتابوں کی صورت میں سامنے لایا جائے گا۔
